Scrap Spinning Service
I love to give new life to old yarn!
My grandmother was the most amazing knitter around. Though we don’t have much of her work these days, I’ve managed to hold onto 4 sweaters and one afghan. The afghan is so treasured because it was knit for my great aunt and upon her passing ~ I actually bought an extra suitcase to bring it home with me from California. There is nothing I treasure more when I’m sick than snuggling up with something made from love and then so carefully cared for so so many years.
BUT…(yea - isn’t there always a but?!?) I’ve also spent 15 years in a small condo and raised two very active girls in said condo, am married to a drummer and helllllooo can you image the craft supplies i have??? Point is - I get space issues. I love KonMarie. I understand that we can’t keep everything that we’ve ever loved. Especially when it doesn’t ‘spark joy’ or speak to us anymore.
That is why I am so excited about this. Now you can upcycle old yarn that has sentimental value. Or an old knit piece doesn’t fit anyone or has too many holes and certainly isn’t going to be shared amongst 5 grandkids. Now that same can have a new life. This art yarn can is hands-on in the thick and thin style and is most often used in weaving projects or as an accent to knitting projects. Wall hangings make absolutely precious decor, (especially in nurseries) and am typically found wearing one of my embellished scarves when the weather suites.
STEP 1: send your scrap yarn to me
Step 2: I prep your yarn and with a white base, add in a few flourishes
Step 3: Next I prepare whats called a ‘batt’, effectively integrating the fibers together so they can be spun.
Step 4: the batt ready to be spun
Step 5": the thick & thin spun single
Step 6: The finished yarn is a two-ply either spun on itself for extra fluff or with a wrap as shown here that really emphasizes the thick and the thin parts.
Once your order is placed, I will contact you to discuss the end use for your yarn, color wishes, etc as well as provide you with my shipping information.
Frequently Asked Questions
*What is the turnaround time?*
3 weeks. If there is a change in this due to holidays, vacations or just backlog of work, a notification will be posted on the website for new orders.
What type of yarn can I send in?
Really anything you have. The example skein shown above has wool, rayon, alpaca, cotton, and bamboo silk! The only thing I ask you not include are fibers that have no give (i.e. macrame rope).
Can I send fabric in with the yarn?
Absolutely! I don’t have any current examples of wool based yarn with fabric scraps but do hope to have a series soon to share. That said, if you’re doing a combination, I’d recommend not filling you bag with more than 1/2 fabric.
Are all of your colors so girly?
Hee. Guilty Girl Mom here. But no. Absolutely not. I have many earthy neutrals and naturally dyed fibers as well as lots of blue/greens. This will be an important part of our discussion once you make your purchase and while choosing your yarn to send in.
How much yarn can I expect back?
Sandwich Bag: Approximately 25-30 yds
Quart Bag: Approximately 50-60yds
Gallon Bag: Approximately 100-120yds
I will do my part to make sure you receive the minimum stated amount. However if you ask for a SUPER BULKY plied yard you may receive less, where as a bulky yarn thats been wrapped will be more generous with the yards received. Happy to explain the nuance if you need it - email me!
